Client Question
“We have our Cyber Essentials audit today and they have asked for evidence that we have extended support for Server 2012. My understanding was that any VM running in Azure is automatically extended but I can’t find anything that confirms my thinking? Do you know?”
The Answer
Yes, your understanding is correct:
Any Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 instance running as an Azure Virtual Machine is automatically covered by Extended Security Updates (ESU) at no additional cost.
No activation keys or manual configuration are required with updates delivered through standard Windows Update channels.
What Are ESUs?
Extended Security Updates provide critical and important security patches for legacy Windows Server versions after end of support. They do not include new features or non-security updates.
How to Get ESUs
There are three main scenarios:
1. Azure Virtual Machines
- Automatically covered for ESU until October 13, 2026.
- No extra steps required.
2. Azure Arc–Enabled Servers (On-Prem or Hosted Elsewhere)
- Eligible for ESU via Azure subscription with monthly billing.
- Requires connecting the server through Azure Arc.
3. On-Premises Servers Without Azure Arc
- Must purchase ESUs through Volume Licensing.
- Requires Software Assurance and activation using a Multiple Activation Key (MAK).
Key Dates
- ESU Year 1: Oct 2023 – Oct 2024
- ESU Year 2: Oct 2024 – Oct 2025
- ESU Year 3: Oct 2025 – Oct 13, 2026 (Final cutoff)
After October 13, 2026, no further security updates will be provided.
Action Steps
- If your servers are in Azure, you’re already covered.
- For on-prem servers, consider Azure Arc or Volume Licensing.
- Plan migration or upgrade before October 2026 to avoid security risks.
