Having completed the acquisition of VMware on 22nd November 2023, Broadcom hasn’t wasted any time and has announced some very significant changes to the VMware licensing. Effective immediately is a move from perpetual licensing to subscription only.
The announcement focused on streamlining the product portfolio to two primary offerings:
- VMware Cloud Foundation – The article mentions this as being the flagship enterprise-class hybrid cloud solution, with a reduction in the previous subscription list price by half with improved support services
- vSphere Foundation – which delivers a more simplified enterprise-grade workload platform will integrate vSphere with the operations management. If the operations management isn’t currently licensed, this could be a step up in the product and a potential price increase
- Optional add-ons to both VMware Cloud Foundation and vSphere Foundation for storage, ransomware and disaster recovery, and application platform services. And application network and security offerings for the VMware Cloud Foundation.
Broadcom have stated there will be a “trade-in” program enabling perpetual license holders to transition to subscription products with upgrade pricing incentives.
With budgets for the next financial year already started for a number of The SAM Club clients, the full effect of these changes is unknown currently. At The SAM Club, we are not software resellers so will be working closely with all our clients to help maximise the trade-in offers available.
