This blog is particularly relevant if you have already moved to or are planning to move to Office 365/Microsoft 365.
Visio has been available as a standalone app for purchase as a perpetual license or as an add-on to the Microsoft 365/Office 365 suite for users with specialised diagramming needs. In July 2021, Microsoft announced it will be rolling out a Free lightweight version of the Visio web app to subscribers of Microsoft 365/Office 365 to bring visual diagramming and collaboration to all teams. The full announcement can be found here: Bringing Visio to Microsoft 365: Diagramming for everyone | Microsoft 365 Blog
This lightweight version of the web app will offer core Visio functionalities, allowing users to create, edit, and share professional diagrams. Users with more specialised diagramming needs will still need either Visio Plan 1 or Visio Plan 2 which remain as paid for subscription licenses.
Now is a good time to review your existing Visio users and the level of functionality required as there could be an opportunity to reduce license costs. The free version also opens up Visio for more employees that may only require ad-hoc, limited functionality.
