Microsoft has announced a new virtual core licensing option for Windows Server, as opposed to paying for the operating system based on the physical processor cores in host machines.
Details are still a bit thin but the new licensing option is scheduled to become available on 1st October 2022.
The SAM Club’s view is that this new licensing option is unlikely to be attractive if you have a large number of virtual machines installed on a physical server. It will only be attractive if you have a small number of virtual machines installed on a physical server.
Microsoft’s stated aim with this new licensing option is to get users migrating Windows Server into the cloud. But not just any cloud – the new license does not apply to Alibaba, Amazon Web Services, Google, and even Microsoft Azure. Instead the target is clouds run by Microsoft’s partner community.
